Our Colic Story and Tips for Comforting a Fussy Baby

March 4, 2016

My son was born in October 2013. Around Christmastime, he developed colic symptoms. A.K.A crying for no obvious reason at the same time of day, every day. Every evening at 5p.m. he would start screaming. He wouldn’t stop until 2a.m. This lasted for 2 months. We were lucky in my opinion because I know others who have had to deal with it for several months longer than that. During that phase, we were grumpy due to lack of sleep and extremely frustrated. Our doctor told us he would grow out of it, and that is literally the last thing I wanted to hear. I wanted a quick fix. I wanted to know what was causing his discomfort so I could stop it. We tried a lot of things but nothing seemed to work. He even fussed as I nursed him during that period of time. It was miserable.

The good news is that we made it out alive and he was a wonderful baby after that. This experience also made our second baby seem like a breeze. So, see? There are positives! I really wish I had Gerber soothing products during that phase of our lives. They would have been very helpful in aiding my son and giving him relief.

Tips for Calming A Colic or Fussy Baby

Hold them and rock them. Babies thrive off of the touch of their mothers. That is why all of these wraps and baby carriers have been so popular. Babies want to be close to their mommas and sometimes this can help them feel comforted.

Distract them. Colicky babies are next to impossible to distract with something while they are having an episode, but if your baby is just a little fussy, try distracting them with their favorite toy. Play peek-a-boo or teach them to clap their hands. Often times, like adults, a distraction is just the thing to get their mind off of what is bothering them.

Make sure they don’t have a dirty diaper and aren’t hungry. I feel like this is extremely obvious, but when I had my newborns (and even sometimes now) my mind would totally blank on when the last time was that I had fed them. You are sleep deprived and it is impossible to think straight. Make sure all of their needs have been met.

Try GERBER® Soothe products:

• GERBER® Soothe probiotics Colic Drops

• GERBER® Good Start® Soothe Powder formula

While I have not tried these myself, after reading a great deal bout them, I wish I had them around a few years ago. The probiotics in these products help rid the baby’s intestines of the bad bacteria that is present in a colicky baby. Colic is very common. Did you know 3 in every 10 babies will have it? That’s crazy to me! If you are in the middle of this battle, it is worth a try, right? I know I would’ve tried anything for my baby to feel relief. You can even purchase these products on Amazon here and here. I’m pretty positive you can buy just about anything on Amazon these days.
