Chic Holiday Bathroom and DIY Toilet Paper Decor

November 7, 2016

We are moving into our new house over the next couple of weeks. Because I just had our sweet baby boy, we are taking it a little slow and doing a little at a time. One thing I have been looking forward to the most is being able to decorate our own home for the holidays. I missed it so much last year and I have been counting down the days until I could get my hands on this one. Our new home is very light and airy which is much more my style and I am thrilled to finally begin the process of decorating. I figured if we were going to move our Christmas boxes and decorations in, I might as well get started instead of dragging it right back out in a couple of weeks. See? It’s completely logical to decorate early.

Fall Mantel Makeover with American Home™ by Yankee Candle® Brand

September 25, 2015

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #LoveAmericanHome #CollectiveBias

Growing up, my mother always went all out decorating for every holiday, birthday and season. She loves to decorate and is so creative. I like to think I got a tiny bit of her talent, although I think my sister inherited most of it. When I think back on my childhood, I immediately think about the holidays. They have always been so special. I come from a big family. All of my aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents get together for holidays/birthdays and other times throughout the year. We are so blessed to all have close relationships. This time of year makes me so nostalgic and all I can think is, I want my kids to have that.

Fall-Mantel

I am determined to carry on the tradition of baking holiday treats, making crafts and decorating the house for the seasons. I want my children to have just as special childhood as I had. I want them to remember how much fun we have during the holidays and I want us to create traditions together. One tradition I grew up with was decorating the mantel. While my mother does the majority of the decorating, I always enjoyed “helping” – even if that meant handing her the scissors or holding the ladder. I love seeing several pieces come together to make a beautiful focal point. The end presentation is always so perfect, not because we have top of the line decorations, but because we created it together.

Fragrance

This past week, I decided it was time for my big fall mantel makeover. I went to Walmart and purchased a small pumpkin and American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand in “Shades of Fall,” “Fresh Apple” and “Pumpkin.” I loved the traditional fall colors of these candles, but most of all I loved their fragrances. They are heavenly. I have been burning them round the clock in our home.

I also grabbed a few other decorations from around the house that I thought would be a good fit for my fall mantel. I grabbed an old window that I bought at a flea market a few years ago for $10, a DIY fall wreath that I made two years ago (and is still holding up great), a leafy candle ring, vase, a fall sign, a leaf banner that I scored on the dollar rack at a local department store and my new candles and pumpkin!

Fall-Decor

I always like to play around with the heights. My mom taught me that having differing heights throughout your decor really helps the aesthetic and layout.  Here is how I created my mantel:

mantel

1. I put my window in the center of the mantel and attached the leaf banner to the top of it.

2. I placed my wreath off to one side of my window because I liked the way it looked more than when it was centered. It was almost too perfect that way. You can play around with it and see what suits you.

3. I placed two shorter objects off of the window – my pumpkin on one side and my American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand with the leafy candle ring around it.

4. On the ends, I put taller items to keep with the differing heights. I put a vase I had laying around on one side with flowers and my fall sign on the other. If you don’t have a fall sign, think about printing a Fall print out and putting it in an 8×10 frame.

It was very simple but I love the way it looks in our home and my son is obsessed with the little pumpkin. I’m thinking the holidays are going to be really fun with him this year! I am so happy that my home is now holiday-ready for all of our entertaining and family.

I shared how I made over my mantel with American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand from Walmart. Now tell me how you prepare your home for Fall!

How To Make a Burlap Wreath

September 3, 2015

Burlap-Wreath

Last week’s cooler weather really got me in the spirit of fall. Over the weekend, I started decorating for my favorite season and even got a little crafty. I went to Hobby Lobby and grabbed a few supplies and decided to make a new wreath. I know it is technically a little early, but our home is almost ready to welcome the new season! Here is a really simple tutorial on how to make your own burlap wreath:

How-To

What You Need:
1 – 18″ wire wreath
60 feet of 5″ wide burlap ribbon or garland (20 yards)
1 – 18 foot spool of 1.5″ wide orange gingham wired accent ribbon (9 yards)
1 – 18 foot spool of 1.5″ wide orange Moroccan wired accent ribbon (9 yards) (or the ribbon of your choice)
– A 6″ Tin Letter
-A pumpkin floral accent
-Hot Glue Gun and glue

Let’s Get Started:

knot

1. Tie the burlap into a knot on the back side of the wire wreath (I did it on one of the middle wires). Repeat with other ribbons.

weave

2. Turn the wreath back around and begin weaving the ribbon through the wired wreath, alternating sides and ribbons. I created about a 4 inch loop (height) but you can make it smaller or larger depending on your preference.

3. Make sure to push the loops tightly together so you don’t have any unwanted gaps.

4. When your spools run out, go ahead and start a new one by tying the end of the ribbon in a knot on the backside of the wired wreath.

5. When you get to the end, tie the ends of your spools to the back of the wired wreath and fluff/arrange the loops to your liking.

6. Tie your letter to the top of the wreath using either twine or leftover ribbon. I chose to use my ribbon.

DIY-Wreath

7. Place your floral pumpkin (or flowers) on your wreath and poke the stem through the wire. Twist it around the wire and then hot glue the back of the pumpkin to the wreath to hold it in place.

8. Hang your wreath and enjoy your newest DIY!

How To Decorate Your Home For Summer

July 23, 2015

summer

My mother is extremely gifted in all things design and decor. She has an eye for it that constantly amazes me. My sister is fortunate to have received this trait as well, but the gene skipped me. I have, however, learned a few tips from watching them over the years on how to decorate, things not to do, etc. One of them is how to change your decor around to make it appropriate for each season without completely redoing your entire home. I recently bought new living room furniture and chose very neutral shades for our chairs, sofa and rug. Our walls are all very neutral – beiges, grays, and my chocolate dining room – so that I can easily change up accent pieces to make my home appropriate for the changing seasons. Here is how I do it:

Add color – I love to add touches of color throughout the home – yellow for summer, red for Christmas, pastels for spring etc.

Change out pillows – I change out my throw pillows on the couch to go with the seasons. I have red pillows for winter and floral pillows for spring and summer. They make a huge difference in the way our living room looks and feels.
Add colorful artwork – I haven’t done a good job of this recently. I LOVE art. I am not talented in this area, but I have a huge appreciation for it. I love architecture as well, but I am very picky about what I want in my house. Because of this, I have almost none. Oi.
Fresh flowers – Adding seasonal flowers to a home will always make a house feel warm and inviting while also adding fragrance and color. Everyone loves flowers! They are a great way to decorate for the changing seasons.

How do you decorate your home for the summer?

Baby Girl Nursery Reveal

Girl-Nursery
Tissue Garland: c/o Love Garlands

I have finally finished the nursery! Most everything you see in the room is H’s old nursery decor and furniture, I just added a few feminine touches. I picked up this rug from TJ Maxx for $15! I was pretty happy about that. I purchased her a new bumper and crib sheet to add a little pink in the room from Bye Bye Baby. The Tissue Garland above her bed is by Love Garlands! Isn’t it so cute? I wanted something light and girly above her crib and this was the perfect decor to complete her nursery!

Yes, one of the handles is broken thanks to a very clumsy and determined toddler. It is on my list of things to fix this week.

I’ve still got a picture of H in the frame until we have SR’s newborn photos done after she is born. I will trade them out after that. 🙂 I picked up this little table at TJ Maxx and painted it with homemade chalk paint that Ryan and I mixed up real quick. It turned out perfect!

Friday’s Letters

September 20, 2013

Dear Fall, thank you for finally hitting the great state of Alabama with your cool mornings this week. It has been a nice and welcomed change. Dear husband, thank you for keeping me sane during my nesting phase and putting up with me this week when I asked you to put 1,000 things together. You are a real trooper and baby H and I are lucky to have you. Dear neighbor, as sweet as you are, I just can’t handle when you ask me if I’m having triplets while I’m out exercising. Obviously I am about to pop and my confidence is a little low as it is. You probably shouldn’t ask any other pregnant woman that question again because they may not be as nice as I was. Dear Starbucks, thank you for your incredible Pumpkin Spice Lattes and for my third craving this pregnancy. Thank you also for spilling my drink and giving me 2 free ones for the inconvenience which really wasn’t an inconvenience to me. Dear Hampton, please come a week or two early. Mommy wouldn’t be mad if you did. In fact, it is encouraged. We are so ready to meet you. Dear Florida Gators, please don’t embarrass your fans tomorrow like you did two weeks ago. You about made a pregnant woman cry. I would really love it if coach Mushroom gave you a stern talking to and you pulled out a win.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

November 27, 2012

This is truly the most wonderful time of the year. I love everything about the Holiday season- the snow (in some places), sweaters, scarves, boots, lights, trees, decor, giving gifts, finding ways to serve and seeing other people serving, but most of all I love that we get to celebrate JESUS CHRIST. He is, after all, the reason for the season! 🙂 So it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Cantrell house, and (ba da ba ba ba) I’m lovin’ it!
