We’ve all done it. I’ve done it more times than I can count. Scandal excites us until we are on the other end of it. Have you been on that other end? I have. It’s not fun. I left my college because of rumors that were floating around about me. As false as they were, they still got to me. Everyone talked. Stared. Whispered. I wanted to group them all in a room together and yell “it’s not true! It’s all a lie! If you gave me the chance to really get to know me, you’d see that it’s a lie.” I never got that chance. After 3 long semesters of trying to fit in, of trying to live out my parents legacy, I couldn’t do it anymore. The gossip got to me. It drained me. It disappointed and killed me on the inside. Girls can be pretty mean.

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Proverbs 12:18

Recently a scandal unfolded in our city. It happened to a man at our church that is exactly my age. All anyone can do is talk talk talk about it, but has anyone thought about his wife? His son? His parents? What it’s doing to them? The gossip effects everyone. Even the innocent. And we are all innocent until proven guilty (not saying he is, but who actually knows the full story?).

I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,

We are all too busy getting into the drama that excites us so, but do you ever stop and think, that it may not be true? Do you ever stop to think that maybe it’s all a lie? That you are getting excited over a lie that is ruining someone’s life?

For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

It’s happened to me. Has it happened to you? Think next time you spread that gossip, because it may be as false as Dolly’s ta tas.
