Have a wonderful Sunday and a Merry Christmas!!

A few weeks ago, I signed up to participate in my first ever ornament swap. Little did I know, I would make such a precious friend. Over the past few weeks I have gotten to know Barb who blogs over at One Love  One Life One Family. She is such a precious person and that came out through her gift. Barb truly went above and beyond. Not only did she buy me a Starbucks ornament (which was all too perfect for me) but she also MADE an ornament, bought me a Starbucks gift card, and Christmas tissues. How thoughtful is she? Please stop by her blog and say hi!

Thanks again, Barb!

The ladies on my sidebar are seriously some of the sweetest people. I have really enjoyed getting to know them this month. They are so supportive, kind, and generous.I hope you will all take the time to get to know them as well. Meet my Coffee Beans!

I asked them what their favorite holiday tradition is and this is what they shared:

Chelsea @ Yours Truly

Favorite Tradition: Eating. and eating some more. No, I’m kidding (not really)..one of my fave traditions is every Christmas eve, our whole family drives to town to order takeout chinese food, then during the 30 min wait for our food we drive around the city and look at everyone’s Christmas lights. Then we go home and eat..my other fave!

Abbey @ The Making’s of a Mess

Favorite Tradition: Ever since I was little, me and the siblings always had to sit on the stairs before we went to open up our stockings at the dining room table. Mom had to make sure everything was ready before we came down! We also take a picture of us on the steps each year as well. [Oh, and I love our Christmas morning breakfast…delicious!]

Nikki @ The Crafty Side of Sarcasm

Favorite Tradition: My favorite holiday tradition is decorating the Christmas tree. I do it every year with my mom while my dad is off doing something with my brother while we get “girl” time. My mom is my best friend {besides my brother} & it’s something we’ve done since i was little. She wont let anyone else help if they offer because she said that’s “our thing”. I love pulling out the old ornaments we’ve had for years, her favorite part is hanging the ornaments my brother & I made when we were little {no matter how cheesy we think they are}.

The Bellwether by James W. Nelson
2011

Format: e-book

First Line: “Gaze out straight, Aaron Hodges,” Four Crows said, “Try to envision Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce people in their last days of freedom.”

Synopsis on Goodreads: Think of the 1800s, the wagontrains, and the people who crossed the prairie looking for a better life. Now fast-forward to the new millennium and the worldwide economy totally crashing, causing unbelievable chaos and violence. Through Native American prophecy, Aaron Hodges sees it coming and envisions building a hidden colony to ride out the likely decades-long crisis.
When the crash came nobody could point a finger and blame a specific thing. The United States and the world were locked in drought, stagnant economy, and rampant pollution. Too many people were wasting too much, demanding too much standard of living, and too much money created too much free time and entertainment, for, as one height was reached boredom prevailed, and more and greater thrills were demanded.
More wood, more metal, more food and drink, and more oil.
The oil flow stopped.
Then the flow of supplies stopped. The civilized world found itself trapped inside a steel, concrete, and plastic wasteland with no utilities, no food, no water.
And no gasoline.

Aaron Hodges is the bellwether. He sees the future through the prophecies of his Nez Perce friend, Four Crows. As Aaron sits on a log, Four Crows makes a symbolic painting on the back of his suede shirt, and speaks to him with a ghostly voice from the past, and future, a future that will see the unification of the Native American and the civilized world falter. Consequently, Aaron makes preparations early, but, unable to believe such a disaster could really occur, he gets sidetracked with a factory job, a Las Vegas gambling trip, buying a small farm, fighting environmental battles, but does stumble onto a beautiful location for a hidden self-sufficient colony. The people he attempts to recruit for colonists also cannot visualize such a bad thing happening, especially Caroline.
When the crash happens, martial law is declared. No taking a caravan down a hardtop road.
So some 60 people go cross-country in 16 covered wagons each pulled by a 4-horse team, over fields, prairie, and forest, about 40 days and 300 miles from southern Minnesota farming country into northern Minnesota wilderness.
Caroline Jentner is the love of Aaron’s life. She has a partly-crippled, seven-year-old daughter, Jennie. Little Jennie doesn’t have a big part, and doesn’t appear until chapter 12, but when she does appear she will capture your heart. You will come to love her, and she helps Aaron and her mom finally get together near the end of story. Caroline often has the viewpoint, and sees the world quite differently from Aaron.
George, a senior citizen hobo, is picked up by Aaron just outside a truck stop at Cheyenne, Wyoming; he has no last name and a peculiar body odor. Aaron and George will both get a job at the same factory where Caroline works, George will help Aaron and Caroline get together after an absence of 19 years. Later, George will become Aaron’s handyman at his small farm, and throughout their relationship George serves as Aaron’s living conscience.
Set in the near future, novel runs for two years. Background themes include the economy, environment, and a shadowy “master race” organization. This novel is character-driven, just normal people loving and finding love, surviving, and reacting to circumstances as best they can. You will like the characters, you will care what happens to them, and at the end you will cheer.

My Thoughts: The Bellwether is an exciting novel that takes us on a wild ride through the end of the worldwide economy and one man’s actions to get through it. If you like adventure with some romance thrown in, this book will capture your imagination.

The book started out a bit slow for me, but it picked up towards the middle and grew very exciting. There are many characters to become acquainted with but the author includes a character reference at the end that is very helpful. Although it is fairly long, the author does a good job of keeping the story moving and preventing the reader from getting bored. Overall, this book was a good read. If you want something that will keep you entertained, check out The Bellwether. I gave this book four stars.

The ladies on my sidebar are seriously some of the sweetest people. I have really enjoyed getting to know them this month. They are so supportive, kind, and generous.I hope you will all take the time to get to know them as well. Meet my Extra Shots of Espresso!

I asked them what their favorite holiday tradition is and this is what they shared:

Taylor @ Goings on in Texas

Favorite Tradition: When I was a kid, I looked forward to Christmas Eve so much. My family would eat dinner either out some where or someone would cook, we would attend our Christmas Eve service at church and then go look at Christmas lights afterward. When we got home, it was time to open one present (my brother and I) and it was always Christmas PJ’s. And then if my mom’s parents were with us for the Christmas holiday, my brother and I would perform some sort of Christmas play with our grandfather (we had practiced and practiced…haha). I remember one year we did a version of Scrooge and my grandfather played Scrooge and removed his false teeth and everything (I remember that being sort of scary and fascinating all at the same time! haha) These are memories I’ll cherish forever!

Nikki @ From a Miss to a Mrs.

Favorite Tradition: My favorite holiday tradition has to be Christmas Eve at my mom’s house. We always order pizza and chow down in front of the T.V. while we watch The Grinch, then open 90% of our presents. It’s one of my favorite things to do all year long.

Natalie @ At Home with the Hinkley’s

Blog | Twitter | Facebook

Favorite Tradition: My favorite holiday tradition is decorating at my Mom’s house.  We blast the Johnny Mathis Christmas album on repeat and go to town!  It is so fun to pull out all the old ornaments and decorations that she has had since my brother and I were tiny.

Dani @ Football and Rainbows

Favorite Tradition: For Christmas Slugger, our elf on the shelf, comes out and does all kinds of fun things.  I also take my son, Ashton, out every year to go look at Christmas lights and drink hot chocolate while we are looking.

Tarole @ Island Livin’ with One Haole Girl

Favorite Tradition: My favorite holiday tradition is during Thanksgiving weekend, my entire family gets together for Thanksgiving on Thursday. The women go shop for Black Friday while the men go on a big hunt trip until Sunday. It’s the same every year and it never gets old!

Kelsey @ Stories of Kel

Favorite Tradition: My favorite holiday memory is getting together with tons of family and playing music together. We all take turns singing, playing instruments, and dancing. It is so much fun!

Sarah @ Beyond the Gradebook

Favorite Tradition: I have so many favorite holiday traditions.  Christmas Eve services with my family and opening one present on Christmas Eve (always pajamas, a robe, or something of the sort) are my top favorites, though.

Sabz @ The Eclectic Grab Bag

Favorite Tradition:  During the Holidays, my family and I jump in the car and visit Crippsmas Place to see all of the decorated houses and lights they put up ever year in a neighborhood not too far from us.  It’s a bunch of different streets and you can either drive to see it all, but a lot of people walk around with their families to enjoy it a little longer.  On one of the courts, there is a donation center where they collect money to divide between different charities and save a little to update some of the decorations and lights as well.  We love it so much and never miss one year!

Ashley @ Simply Ashley

Favorite Tradition: My favorite holiday tradition is making Christmas cookies! I cannot wait to make them for the first time with my daughter Addie this year! :)) I am hoping she enjoys it as much as I did growing up.

Goings on in Texas

This month’s questions:

1. What are you currently reading? Tell us about it.

-I just started The Distant Hours by Kate Morton. I read The Forgotten Garden by Morton a month ago and it is now one of my favorite books, so I wanted to read something else by her. Since I just started it, I don’t know a lot yet, but there is already an air of mystery which is very exciting.

2. If you could choose any author in the world to write a story based on your life, who would you choose to be the author? Why?

-Easy. Adriana Trigiani. I have fallen in love with her writing style mostly because of the way she writes stories. She writes novels based on her Italian heritage and I love that.

3. Tell us about your favorite place to read.

-My chaise lounge by the fireplace in our home. It’s so comfortable and the perfect chair to cozy up on to get lost in a book. I also like to read on our back porch if the weather is nice.

4. What books would you buy for lovers of
a) chicklit, b) literary fiction, c) classics?

-a) Anything from Nora Roberts, especially her Bride Quartet, any of the Emily Giffin Books (Something Borrowed Series especially).

-b) The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton and The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adriana Triginai have been two of my favorites this year.

-c) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen,  anything by Charles Dickens, and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
